More and more women are making a conscious choice for motherhood outside of marriage — and this is a fully valid, well-considered life decision. But what should a woman do who wants to become a mother yet, for medical reasons, cannot carry a pregnancy herself? Today, surrogacy for single women is a real and legally regulated path for her, built on the same gestational surrogacy model used across our programmes.
At the same time, the available options depend on the country: surrogacy legislation varies considerably, and a single woman needs to choose a jurisdiction that matches her situation. If you do have a partner, other options become available too — our page on surrogacy for traditional couples covers those in detail.
Armenia — One of the Destinations for Single Women
Armenia is among the countries where single women can legally take part in surrogacy programmes. Surrogacy itself has been regulated by law here since 2002, while the possibility for single individuals to participate emerged relatively recently — following an amendment to the legislation in 2024. The rights of the intended mother are protected: the surrogate has no rights whatsoever to the child and is not recorded in the documents immediately after birth.
There is one important condition that you must clearly understand from the outset.
In Armenia, a single woman may use only her own eggs. The law requires the intended mother to have a genetic connection to the child. For this reason, the programme in Armenia is suitable for women who:
- cannot carry a pregnancy themselves for medical reasons, but
- have viable eggs of their own.
There is one more aspect to take into account. Although the legislation does not set an explicit age limit for the intended mother, the requirement to use one’s own eggs effectively limits the age in practice to around 40 years. Beyond this age, eggs generally become less suitable for fertilisation outside the woman’s body. This is not a legal but a biological limitation — yet in practice it determines whom the programme in Armenia is genuinely suitable for.
Surrogacy here is exclusively gestational surrogacy: the surrogate mother never has a genetic connection to the child she carries. This safeguards the ethics and the legal transparency of the process.
